Turn off the Lights

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Maveth Review

The mid-season finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was another heart racing thrill ride, even though it had a slow start. The episode was appropriately titled “Maveth," as the team got an upclose and personal look at that mysterious planet. The episode started right where the story left off last time. Coulson, Fitz, Ward and the team of Hydra agents were trying to navigate their way across Maveth in search of the mysterious creature of death. Ward made it clear right away that Fitz was only there to serve as bait for this monster, who was said to be attracted by blood. That definitely sounds like something you want to mess with, Ward. Fitz, however, had plans of his own and quickly found Will’s underground bunker. Unfortunately, Will ended up actually being the monster. I feel like this reveal wasn’t as shocking as it could have been. I just had a sense the whole time that something was off with Will. I was actually wondering if he had actually been a Hydra agent this whole time. It turned out the real Will died helping Jemma back through the portal and the monster of death took his form. MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - "Maveth" - S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra go head-to-head in a battle that will change Coulson's world forever. While Daisy and her team of Inhumans fight to keep Hydra at bay, Coulson and Fitz take the ultimate risk, in the epic winter finale of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Nicole Wilder) HENRY SIMMONS While Fitz was busy dealing with fake Will, Coulson was struggling with his own demons. For a brief moment, he dreamt about being in bed with Rosalind, but her image encouraged him to wake up and fight, and fight he did. He found Ward, pretty quickly might I add, and promptly shot him twice. As Coulson was fighting Ward, Fitz was fighting fake Will, and that whole double fight scene was more humorous than intense for some reason. Maybe it was just the framing or the fact that the majority of the scene was green screen, but it just didn’t work. By some miracle, both Fitz and Coulson made it through the portal, leaving their fighting partners behind… or so we thought. Coulson killing Ward was also a really strange scene. It appeared as though Coulson used his super strength hand to literally crush Ward’s ribs, but then he left his super hand there. I’m not sure why he would do that. Those can’t be cheap or easy to come by. And then, at the end, Coulson gave Fitz a really weird look as if to say, “What happens on Maveth stays on Maveth.” But I’m pretty sure everyone wanted Ward dead anyway. I guess it was pretty cruel the way he did it, but it was nothing worse than what Ward had done. Meanwhile the rest of the gang decided it would be a good idea to infiltrate Hydra and save Simmons while making sure only their teammates came through the portal. This storyline was really uninteresting to me and they didn’t seem to have any problems getting in and eventually blowing up the whole castle. I kept expecting them to get trapped, because it seemed too easy, but apparently someone at Hydra was sleeping on the job. MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - "Maveth" - S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra go head-to-head in a battle that will change Coulson's world forever. (ABC/Nicole Wilder) ELIZABETH HENSTRIDGE At the same time, Simmons was trapped with Hydra trying to find her own way out. She discovered that Hydra was bringing in Inhumans to that particular base to create an army. Simmons, naturally,  found them and thought it would be a good idea to release Andrew/Lash to take out Hydra. But, in the process of doing so, he also took out the rest of the Inhumas. Not great. I wonder if he will ever be able to be contained. While I was glad that everyone on the S.H.I.E.L.D. team survived (and I’ll even admit I’m glad Will is out of the picture), the episode just felt very disjointed and messy. It seemed like they just wanted everything to come together. The pieces were there, but they didn't quite match up, so they shoved it all together as simply as possible. I think last week was a much stronger finale-type episode. The only thing that made it feel like a finale was all the hugging at the end. Coulson was hugging May, Daisy was kissing Lincoln, and Fitz was hugging Simmons. My heart really broke when Simmons went looking for Will before she even went to Fitz. Poor Fitz travels across the universe and still doesn’t get any appreciation. I hope he gets a different love interest in the future. Final Thoughts: - Was that final clip Ward or the mysterious Maveth monster? - Even though Ward is horrible, he makes things interesting and I’ll be sad to see him go. - Will Jemma be able to forget Will and finally give Fitz the love he deserves? Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t be back until March 8, 2016, but Agent Carter will be back with a two-hour premiere January 19.
