Andrew Stanton Climbs Aboard ‘Finding Nemo 2’

Well that was fast. Not long after Andrew Stanton steered Disney to a $200-million loss with the divisive John Carter, he seems to be making amends by going back to animation--namely directing a sequel to his 2003 smash, Finding Nemo.

Deadline broke the news that Stanton is slowly working his way out of the doghouse by agreeing to spearhead a sequel to the Oscar-winning film that grossed over $850 million worldwide with a concept the studio "loves." He's not only brought success (and an Oscar) to Disney/Pixar with "Nemo," bue he wasalso  the director behind Wall-E, which earned another Oscar along with a boatload of cash. Animation is his bread and butter, and after taking a beating at the start of this summer, he's going back to his roots.

But don't count Stanton out of the live-action game forever. Part of the deal with his "Nemo" sequel is that the studio gives him another shot at a live-action project, the details of which are still being worked out between all parties involved. Given the number of hits Stanton has brought to the studio and the fact that he is hardly the first director to have missed a step on his first run out, expect Disney to give him another go. Just maybe not with quite so large a budget.

In the meantime, while the sequel details are forming, the original Finding Nemo is set to be re-released in 3D this September, no doubt adding millions more to it's already massive tally from almost a decade ago. Seriously though ... how many times can you lose your child?
