“Avatar” sequels eye December 2014, 2015 releases

Writer/director James Cameron took the international box office by storm with the record-shattering sci-fi epic Avatar. Given the film’s status as the highest grossing film of all time and the slight open-endedness provided by the ending, the idea of it becoming a franchise wasn’t a far-fetched one. Cameron has opened up several times about what we can expect, generically speaking, from the sequels, but now the production schedule is starting to come together.

Cameron recently shared his plans for the franchise with Entertainment Weekly:

“I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan.

Given how well the film did in December, Fox won't want to press its luck. Knowing that Peter Jackson's two films of The Hobbit are set for December 2012 and 2013, the release dates are logical as there's only so much room for mega-budget sci-fi/fantasy epics.

“Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form. Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place.”

It’s easy to criticize the original film from a screenwriting standpoint, but Avatar provided one of the most visually enthralling theatrical experiences in motion picture history, given that you ventured to see it at a theater.

That being said, we can look forward to revisiting Pandora if for nothing more than the highly engaging atmosphere and lush visuals that Cameron expertly crafts with each of his films, despite the likely lack of Oscar-worthy writing.

How do you feel about the wait for a return to Pandora?
