Baz Luhrmann will make “The Great Gatsby” … in 3D

Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! Director Baz Luhrmann has been mulling over whether to pursue his already-cast adaptation of The Great Gatsby, but after some bouts of uncertainty, he confirmed that he would in fact direct the film, which will be shot in 3D.

The pre-production stage begins in March, and shooting begins in August. Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan will play Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, respectively. Tobey Maguire will play narrator Nick Carraway.

While 3D itself is nothing special nowadays, this adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic “will be the first live-action 3D movie shot in New South Wales” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Of course, 3D for a literary classic that isn’t of a fantasy or science fiction nature easily strikes as odd. Even more odd is that the book takes place in New York City.

Luhrmann’s films always make for interesting experiences if nothing else. The 3D easily makes me uneasy, as it often serves as a gimmick to gain audience interest regardless of the product’s overall quality. And as much as I enjoy Luhrmann’s work, he can be quite gimmicky. Expect a heavily superfluous abuse of all three dimensions. I’m not optimistic about it filming in New South Wales either.

How do you feel about The Great Gatsby shooting in 3D and the choice of locale?
