Chris Evans Says ‘Captain America 2’ Likely for 2014

With Thor 2 already in the cards with a July 2013 release date and a hunt for a director, you might be wondering about Marvel Studios' post-The Avengers plans for the Norse God's 2011 campaign buddy, Captain America. While out doing press for his new film Puncture, star Chris Evans has voiced his speculation on when we will see the next solo feature for the Star-Spangled Kid.

In an interview with The Playlist, Evans silences those suggesting he could turn up in other Marvel features; he's signed for three "Cap" films and three "Avengers" films. Cap's post-"Avengers" fate, it seems, waits for 2014.

“(Marvel) may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren’t going to cannibalize their films ... Out of those six films, if I pop up in one of those [other films], it counts as part of the deal. So if they needed me in a third Cap, and I say, ‘Fuck you, give me $30 million,’ well…they want to avoid that.”

With two films to fund for 2013 including Iron Man 3 in May and Thor 2 in July, if Marvel were to have fast-tracked "Captain America 2," they would have done it by now. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked to write the follow-up back in February just in case, but it seems that the standard three-year waiting period for sequels will apply here.

As announced back in August, The Playlist reminds us that Marvel has already staked out May 16, 2014 and June 27, 2014 as potential release dates for films. The latter date would seem most fitting as it's right around the corner from July 4; the May date would come just two weeks after the current date for the sequel to next summer's The Amazing Spider-Man.
