Could ‘The Wolverine’ Have Both PG-13 and R-Rated Versions?

While doing press for his latest film Real Steel, Hugh Jackman — who has played the clawed hero in every entry of the “X-Men” series — told MTV how director James Mangold is considering both a PG-13 and an R-rated version of Wolverine’s next film outing.

Jackman states:

There’s such great temptation to make an R-rated Wolverine. I’ve always felt that. I know a lot of fans would like that…if there was ever a superhero that was going to be R-rated, it’s Wolverine…So my thing is, which James Mangold and I talked about, is let’s not put it off the table. There’s even a talk of us doing two versions, as in finding a way for us to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool.”

Like most news regarding The Wolverine, it is best to take this with a grain of salt. An R-rating, especially for such a prominent project, could be a death sentence for its box office totals, considering the target demographic of past “X-Men” films has largely been teenage boys under the age of 17. Fox would have to be ecstatic with the R cut if they were to put it in theaters. Of course, there’s always a chance for an “Unrated Director’s Cut” making its way to the home disc market, but would it be too late to generate interest in such a version?
