DC Announces Villain Month/Crossover Event

"Trinity War" was just the beginning as DC Comics has unveiled just today their plans for the forthcoming month long theme for September, following in the footsteps of the launch of the “New 52” and last years "Zero Month". It’s something that kickstarts right out of "Trinity War" and it is called – "Villain Month"! For an entire month DC Comics most infamous villains, and some newer, fresher, faces, will take over their erstwhile protagonists book for an entire month. As shown by the Batman solicits for that month this is meant to be a week-by-week thing for the whole month with each issue being representative of one or more of that character’s villains. Each issue will be characterized through the use of special 3D-Motion image technology that DC Comics will be showcasing for the “first time”, touted Dan Didio and Jim Lee.

That’s not even the big news as this initiative also ties into the first line-wide event of the “New 52”, which means that it will cover the entire breadth of the DC Comics Universe: “Forever Evil”. It is a seven issue series that puts Superman mainstay Lex Luthor into the forefront as well as countless other of DC Comics Villains that debuts in September. "The Justice League is dead, the villains inherit the Earth — well, what does that even mean?", describes Geoff Johns It comes from the creative team of Geoff Johns, who self-describes villains as being his “sweet spot” when it comes to writing, and David Finch, fresh from the first three issues of JLA. In the words of Johns - "Once the heroes are off the table, what's that mean for the villains? What can they accomplish together?"

The ramifications of “Forever Evil” will not only be seeded throughout the multitude of Villain Issues that each series will get, but also in the three limited series tie-ins that will debut in October as part of the overall event. These are:

  • Forever Evil: Rogues – from creative team Brian Buccellato (current co-writer of The Flash) and Patrick Zircher (Suicide Squad) that focuses on the fan-favorite “The Rogues” of Flash fame, led by Captain Cold.
  • Forever Evil: Arkham War - with a self-explanatory title and described by Geoff Johns as “the biggest story with Bat-Villains you’ve ever seen” comes from Peter Tomasi (Green Lantern Corps) and Scott Eaton (X-Men)
  • Forever Evil: ARGUS – a story that plays directly into “Forever Evil” and JLA, it tells of Steve Trevor discovering the hidden, and dark, side of ARGUS, from Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT). Kindt will also be taking over JLA for a 5 issue arc showcasing Martian Manhunter.

Geoff Johns will continue to do the main Justice League series for a story arc which will introduce the new band of heroes who will rise to take on the villains. "Villain Month" is yet the next in a long line of events upon events from both of "The Big Two", but Johns has done well by DC Comics villains before (The Rogues, Black Adam, Zoom) - but not on so grand a scale. "Villain Month" will be a test to not only the heroes of the comics that will be a part of it, but also for DC Comics' current creative teams. Please, voice any opinions or comments below.
