Dev Patel in talks to star in ‘Chappie’

Neill Blomkamp’s eagerly anticipated Elysuim is set hit theaters next month but the celebrated South African director is already looking ahead to his next sci-fi project Chappie. It is now moving a step closer with Dev Patel is in early talks to star in the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about Patel joining the project as the human lead. Patel is most famous for his lead role in the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire and his other credits include The Last Airbender, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Skins and The Newsroom.

Blomkamp will reunite with his District 9 writing partner Terri Tatchell and Elysuim producer Simon Kinberg. Word about the plot is being kept under wraps but it is based on Blomkamp’s short Tetra Vaal, a fake commercial about a robot police officer patrolling a South African slum.  Blomkamp’s regular actor Sharlto Copley is already set to appear as a police robot.

Elysium will be out on August 9 and stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
