Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Premiers at VGAs

Bethesda showed the world premier trailer for their next Elder Scrolls game at Spike TV’s Video Game Awards on Saturday, Dec. 11. A release date of Nov. 11, 2011, was also announced.

The trailer, introduced by Bethesda Softworks’ Todd Howard, revealed very few details on characters, plot and gameplay. It looks as if dragons will play a big part in the game as the trailer was mostly comprised of an unseen character providing narration while a camera panned around a series of stone carvings of the winged serpents, one of which eventually became animated and breathed fire.

As most previous games in The Elder Scrolls series (Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion) have been named after geographic locations in the series’ fictional setting of Tamriel, it’s a safe bet that the fifth game will be set in and around the region of Skyrim. Diehard Elder Scrolls fans may recognize this as the home of the series’ Viking-like humans, the Nords.

Earlier reports that Elder Scrolls V would continue the story of the previous installment, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, seem possible as the narrator briefly commented on the opening of the Oblivion gates. Another potential plot device is the mention of “the dragonborn,” possibly a reference to the identity of the player character in the game.

Consoles for the game were not announced, though as the two previous Elder Scrolls games both appeared on Microsoft consoles it is likely Skyrim will end up on the Xbox 360.
