Elementary Adds Betty Gilpin As a Love Interest for Sherlock

"How will this romance go?"

Sherlock hasn’t been seriously involved with anybody since (SPOILERS) Natalie Dormer’s Jamie Moriarty, but Elementary may be looking to change that this season.

(Image via NBC Philadelphia.)[/caption] Entertainment Weekly has learned that Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie) will star on the series as Fiona Helbron, “a brilliant and socially awkward software engineer, who meets Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) and Joan (Lucy Liu) during a murder investigation. Fiona describes herself as “neuro-atypical,” though others might identify her as a high-functioning autistic. She has a hard time reading people, rigidly adheres to rules, and can’t lie.” Due to her similarities with Sherlock, the two “find themselves drawn to each other.” After a third season that I felt lacked focus, this may be the thing that injects some direction into the series. Not that I don't think it's a good series anymore, but it’s been needing a kick in the pants for a while, and from the two episodes I watched in Season 4, John Noble’s appearance as Holmes’ father hasn’t been that. Gilpin will make her debut in Elementary’s January 21 episode, and is set to appear in at least one more entry in the show’s fourth season. For my part, I hope she sticks around, as depicting Sherlock in a healthy (but naturally dysfunctional) long-term relationship might be interesting. Featured image via MeatGrinder.
