Turn off the Lights

Five names emerge for Spidey’s non-MJ love interest

Not long after the announcement that Andrew Garfield was set to play Peter Parker, casting for the female lead in Marc Webb's upcoming Spider-man reboot has commenced. It's interesting to note that this female lead will not be Mary Jane Watson, who was played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi's film adaptations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, the female lead will most likely be one of these three ladies:

Lily Collins - Daughter of Grammy Award-winning rock singer Phil Collins, Lily starred in last year's Academy Award-winning film The Blind Side opposite Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, and Quinton Aaron. She will star in the upcoming film Priest. She was named the One to Watch in 2008 at the Young Hollywood Awards.

Ophelia Lovibond - She was in last year's Nowhere Boy with Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott Thomas and will star alongside Keira Knightley in London Boulevard later this year. She had a role in Roman Polanski's 2005 adaptation of Oliver Twist.

Imogen Poots - Poots starred in Me and Orson Welles alongside Zac Efron and Christian McKay. She has a role in the upcoming Jane Eyre alongside Mia Wasikowska, as well as the remake of Fright Night. She received a British Independent Film Award nomination for her performance in the 2007 film 28 Days Later.

However, there are three other women who are more or less in contention:

Teresa Palmer - She isn't exactly famous, but she was the female lead in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It gives her some sense of credibility as a leading lady, beyond what actresses such as Collins, Lovibond, and Poots have. She received an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Lead Actress in 2006 for 2:37.

Emma Roberts - Roberts has starred in quite a few films lately, including Valentine's Day alongside her famous aunt, Julia Roberts. However, don't think that she has anything to do with her acting career. Emma has been making a name for herself for quite some time. She will also have a role in Wes Craven's Scream 4. In 2007, she was crowned the Female Star of Tomorrow at the ShoWest Convention and received a Young Artist Award for her performance in the film
Aquamarine.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead - According to Heat Vision, Winstead has been dropped from consideration. If this was Mary Jane, I would totally see where Winstead wouldn't fit the bill. However, since we have no clue who this character is going to be, I'm perplexed as to why she's been ruled out. The only thing I can think of is conflicts with scheduling, as she supposedly has
The F-Word currently in the works. She received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for being a part of Bobby's ensemble cast.

Personally, I'm stuck between Collins, Palmer, and Roberts. All three are formidable actresses who have already proven that they can hold their own in a really huge, big-budget production: Collins in "Blind Side," Palmer in "Sorcerer's," and Roberts in "Valentine's." Of course, I don't know much about the other actresses that are in the running, save for Winstead. Then again, we know nothing about the character the winning actress will portray? Gwen Stacey? Felicia Hardy? Someone knew?

What do you think?
