While rumors have been circulating for months, SundanceTV and the BBC have confirmed that a second season of the hit drama Top of the Lake will be airing in 2017. The series, which aired its first season in 2013, was critically acclaimed, winning a Golden Globe for its star, Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss.
Moss will return for the second season as Det. Robin Griffin, a Sydney police officer, who will be investigating a new case that will almost certainly be as chilling as the one in the first season. Joining Moss this time will be Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), as a yet-to-be-named character.
In a statement, Christie gushed over the opportunity to work alongside Moss, and series creator Jane Campion.
“I am so delighted to be working on ‘Top of the Lake’ 2,” Christie said. “Jane Campion has been a major creative influence throughout my life and I could not feel more privileged to be working on the next installment of her unique and enthralling drama, alongside the brilliant Elisabeth Moss.”
Once the series completes filming, it will air in early 2017 on BBC2 in the UK, with an air date in later 2017 expected for SundanceTV in the US.
