Javier Bardem Officially Signed for Massive “Dark Tower” Project

Page Six of the New York Post is reporting that Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) has officially signed on to play Roland Deschain in the film/TV adaptations of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” series. Director Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) is preparing to start production in September and is also slated to direct the first season of the planned TV miniseries, which will be released between the first and second film.

The series centers on Deschain, the last surviving member from a legendary gunslinging order of knights in a world where technology (akin to the old West) and magic coexist. Finding himself the last hope for civilization, Deschain sets out to find The Dark Tower, a place where the axis of all worlds rotate, encountering various locations and characters on his route. The project will include three theatrical films, as well as subsequent TV miniseries’ released between each film.

According to Page Six, a “well-placed source” states “Bardem has signed on to the first movie and the miniseries, but the intention is that he will star in all three movies and each of the TV series”. Such a statement leaves a gray area on whether or not Bardem has the option to jump ship, should the project turn out to be a massive bomb, but for now, the wildly ambitious “Dark Tower” project has it’s leading gunslinger.
