Javier Bardem reportedly offered “The Dark Tower” lead

Casting for the The Dark Tower, Ron Howard's planned film trilogy and TV miniseries based on the novels by Stephen King, is reaching fever pitch. Not long after the New York Post reported that Christian Bale had pulled ahead of Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen as the favored lead to play Roland Deschain, Deadline now states that an "official" offer has been put forward to Bardem.

This news comes shortly after both Bardem and Bale's recent Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Neither being a stranger to a Western (Bardem's No Country for Old Men and Bale's 3:10 to Yuma), both actors are sensible choices to lead the ambitious “Dark Tower” project. Other casting regarding the project has Jennifer Carpenter, of Dexter and The Exorcism of Emily Rose fame, rumored for the leading lady role Susannah (also reported by the New York Post), it may be a safe bet that Howard and his crew have found their lead and are now moving on to other parts to be cast.

As of now, the series would include three proposed films and two seasons of TV over a period of years.
With the recent financial disaster of The Dilemma, Howard’s latest film, look to see more press regarding production developments on the first "Dark Tower" film, which he will direct along with the first season of the planned TV series.
