Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Juno Temple Might Star in “The Dark Knight Rises”

According to outside sources, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to portray Alberto Falcone (a.k.a. the Holiday Killer) in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. However, Dave Karger at Entertainment Weekly is hearing from "a source close to the situation" that Gordon-Levitt will be playing someone other than Falcone.

In addition to this possible casting update, Variety relays that Nolan is seeking Juno Temple to play “a street-smart Gotham girl.”

For whatever reason (Inception?), most of us figured that Gordon-Levitt would figure into Nolan’s final Batman film somehow, and it’s interesting to note that this character that he may or may not be playing is the son of Tom Wilkinson’s character, Carmine Falcone, in Batman Begins. Again, keep in mind that Nolan himself has yet to confirm anything.

If this actually is the case, it's cool to see that Nolan is continuing to utilize more brutal villains and preferring to eschew the more fantastical nemeses. Additionally, Gordon-Levitt has done stellar work over the past several years. He even gave an okay performance in the otherwise abysmal G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

However, the idea of casting Juno Temple is rather peculiar. Not necessarily bad, but did anyone see this coming? Perhaps Nolan wants to bring bigger exposure to actresses who seem otherwise confined to quirky indie flicks; he did cast Ellen Page in Inception, after all.

Production on the film will begin shortly, as Nolan has entered the “fine-tuning” stage of writing the script. He’s also helping with the creative aspects of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. The Dark Knight Rises still looks to hit theaters July 20, 2012.
