Leading Man Wanted for “Bourne Legacy”

Director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum) and Matt Damon have left quite a standard in their wake. With Universal looking to maximize on the well-received series with a spin-off focusing on a new spy (Bourne without Bourne), Deadline reports that director Tony Gilroy, penned the originals, is casting a wide “net” for a new lead actor.

The list of names Deadline has includes Jake Gyllenhaal (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Michael Pitt (The Dreamers), Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Michael Fassbender (X-Men First Class), Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four), Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Joel Edgerton (King Arthur) and Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor).

If these names are to be believed, one must wonder how Gilroy’s “Bourne” film will turn out. As Gilroy was a screenwriter on all three “Bourne” films, he’s certainly familiar with the tone established in the past trilogy. Some have the leading man quality (Gyllenhaal, Fassbender), others come from more quirky/indie backgrounds (Dano, Pitt) while others just look pretty (Hedlund, Pettyfer). Regardless of who is cast, they’ll no doubt need to prove they can handle action in some sense, as any film carrying the “Bourne” name is required of stylized sequences, often involving cars getting crushed without the use of CGI.
