Lego Star Wars License Confusion

"The most adorable time being confused, EVER!"
Well, we all knew it had to happen eventually. On February 2, 2016, Warner Bros Games released the trailer for Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The trailer is a complete shot-for-shot recreation of the original The Force Awakens trailer, with lots of Lego’s trademark cutesy humor tossed in for good measure. Awe, poor whiny emo Kylo Ren. Does your lightsaber not wanna work? This is the first time Lego has released a Star Wars game since the property was bought by Disney. Disney have already stated that no Star Wars character will be part of the massive crossover game, Lego Dimensions. So you might be thinking, “Well, with Disney owning Star Wars and WB owning the Lego properties, how can this game be for real?” Well, to explain the absence of any Star Wars characters in Lego Dimensions, you’d have to look at a very similar game that Disney owns: Disney Infinity. At E3 2015, Disney Vice President of Production John Vignocchi stated that introducing Star Wars characters into Lego Dimensions would “cannibalize” the Disney Infinity games. So unfortunately, it looks like that Star Wars/Doctor Who/Ghostbusters crossover I’ve always wanted is only going stay as a poorly written fan fiction. images So how is WB Games able to make a game based on a Disney film? And where does EA and their game, Star Wars Battlefront, stand in all of this? Well, to say it’s complicated would be an understatement. Apparently, EA Games only holds the rights to Star Wars related characters, locations, etc., but not the films themselves. Which might explain why Battlefront doesn’t have a single player campaign. However, they are still free to create original stories, but that still doesn’t excuse the sixty dollar season pass, EA! stormtroopers_lego_star_wars_force_awakens_warner_bros As for Warner Bros Games, well, putting it simply, Disney and WB Games merely “teamed up” in order to make this game happen. The Lego Star Wars games have proved to be too successful to let a simple licensing issue get in the way of what is too good an idea to pass up. And it’s probably safe to say that Lego Star Wars: Rebel One is already in works while Lego Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released the following year. Personally, I’m excited. The Lego games are all insanely fun, and I’m not gonna lie, I’m very curious as to how they “Lego-ify” some of the key moments of the film. image-13 Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to release on June 28, 2016 for the Playstation 4, XBox One, Playstation 3, XBox 360, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Playstation Vita. A Deluxe Edition will also be available for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One for an additional $10. The Deluxe Edition includes a gold cover, an exclusive Finn minifigure, and the season pass. Wait... a season pass for only ten bucks? TEN BUCKS??? THAT is how you sell a season pass! Take a note, EA!
