NBC to Adapt Single White Female as TV Series

"NBC Will Try to Find Success With a Single White Remake"
Single White Female was based on John Lutz's 1990 novel SWF Seeks Same, and featured Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the starring roles. The film and the original novel tell the story of a woman whose new roommate goes from a perfect fit to a dangerous disaster over a period of time, even going so far as to dress and behave just like her and attempting to steal her boyfriend. The film grossed $48 million dollars at the box office from a budget of $16 million dollars, and spawned one sequel - the direct-to-video Single White Female 2: The Psycho- in 2005. The 2011 film The Roommate has also been accused of being an unofficial remake as well.

The new television series will have several differences from the original film. The new version will be based in San Francisco instead of New York, and will take place in today's world instead of the 1990s time period. Eric Garcia will write the script and act as executive producer for the new Single White Female series, which will be produced by Tri-Star Pictures for Sony Pictures Television. Sony Pictures also distributed the original film.
The Hollywood Reporter obtained the following description of the new series:
"When erstwhile con-artist Hedra (played in the movie by Leigh) uses her professional connections to target Allie (portrayed by Fonda), a seemingly moneyed colleague in search of a roommate, Hedra slowly begins to realize that her mark may not be quite as innocuous as she first seems. Soon, viewers will come to understand that Hedra may have met her match in Allie, making viewers question who is really being 'single white female’d.'"
