Nintendo Addresses Their E3 Plans

Even after negative press last year, Nintendo has decided to again opt out of the traditional E3 press conference format and instead do a Nintendo Direct to announce their next projects. However, they have chosen a much better way to address when and how to watch it.

In comes comedy gaming website Mega64, who produced a skit starring one the site’s founders Rocco Botte scheming to infiltrate Nintendo of America in a Reggie Fis-Aime robotic suit, played by Reggie himself, in order to see the next project located in the company’s localization department, dubbed the Treehouse.
Within the skit, we now know Nintendo will air their Nintendo Direct, called the Nintendo Digital Event, on Tuesday June 10th at 9am PST/ Noon EST. Just go to Nintendo’s E3 site to view it, and hope there’s a YouTube version simulcasting. This event will “reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond.” So hopefully we see news on Super Smash Bros., Bayonetta 2, Monolithsoft’s next project (which better have a name by now), and see announcement of both new and returning franchises for Wii U and 3DS.
Nintendo won’t be done there either. Throughout the E3 week, members of Nintendo’s Treehouse division will be airing “live and unscripted” demo footage from Nintendo’s E3 booth.

Last year, Nintendo brought E3 to many Best Buy locations showcasing their E3 demos of Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8; and it seems they’re doing something more focused this year: a playable Super Smash Bros. for Wii U demo. The Smash Fest @ Best Buy event will allow folks to play the game. Nintendo will also hold the The Super Smash Bros. Invitational at the Nokia Theater (their usual press conference location), in which sixteen talented Smash players will duke it out for all to see online.

In related news, NeoGAF forum member Foshy looked at Nintendo’s source code for their E3 site and revealed a comment about a new Nintendo system, in which Nintendo removed soon after.
Who knows if it is a completely new system, which is still early for that both on the console and handheld fronts, or another redesign for their existing hardware, but that could be one of Nintendo's big surprises for E3 as we'll see in June.
