PC Digital Download Sales 8/29/10

Maybe you know, and maybe you don't, but at Player Affinity, there was a feature called the Steam Sales Report every Friday. This week, and from each week from now on, however, I'm not only going to track Steam sales, but I'll look at Direct2Drive as well, despite my affection for all things Valve. There are some limitations associated with the sales tracking for Direct2Drive though, such as the fact that users can't tell what games are coming to it ahead of release, so predictions may be effected as a result. Also, because of Direct2Drive, this feature will be on Player Affinity on Sunday with sales from 3:00 PM instead of Friday. Enough about the digital download services though, let's look at the sales.

First, let's talk about the differences between Steam and Direct2Drive. Steam has its games that will appear on the top 10 week, after week, after week, no matter what. In fact, a new game has been introduced to that category, I suspect, which is Worms Reloaded. I thought that the sales for the game came from it's low price, but I was wrong. Right now it's not discounted in any way, but it remains in the number 2 spot. I'm impressed. Mount and Blade: Warband got in there with it's 66% off discount, but everything else on the top 10 on Steam was standard. On Direct2Drive, however, there were lots of pairings of games sales provoked by oncoming releases. Mafia II and it's Deluxe counterpart both were there. Civilization V's upcoming release caused people to buy Civilization IV in anticipation, as well as the Deluxe edition of Civilization IV. Hype over Fallout: New Vegas made people buy Fallout 3 for their PC's. The only standalone games were Battlefield, Victoria II, and Star Ruler, but those seem to be standards on Direct2Drive.

It's the cusp of September, so there are lots of September sellers in the coming weeks on Steam. Dead Rising 2, Civilization V, R.U.S.E., and H.A.W.X. 2 to name a few. Many of these are late September though, so the next couple of weeks are going to have standards populating the top 10.
