Fans of Showtime’s freshman horror drama Penny Dreadful can breathe a sigh of relief, as the series has been officially renewed for a second season. The show is currently halfway through its inaugural 8 episode run, and has performed well for Showtime, particularly good news for the network that was greatly in need of a hit following last year’s loss of Dexter and the diminished critical acclaim for Homeland.
Penny Dreadful, which is set in late nineteenth century London and follows the exploits of various horror characters including Doctor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, has received favorable reviews from critics and is generating strong ratings for Showtime. The show has averaged 4.6 million viewers, and the series is currently the most-watched series on Showtime’s OnDemand network.
Little is known about Penny Dreadful‘s second season, but per Entertainment Weekly, showrunner John Logan will wrap-up the show’s current storyline, which features the search for Mina Harker (who has apparently been taken by a powerful vampire who may or may not be Dracula). The second season has also been given an expanded series order and will produce 10 episodes, two more than its first season order of 8. No word on who from the cast will return for season two, but the series stars several name actors (Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, and Timothy Dalton, to name the three largest), so it is conceivable that some of the current cast may not return for a second season.
