Portal 2 Set for February 9, 2011

In 2007 Portal came as a huge surprise to many of us. The intelligently designed puzzle platformer was one of 2007’s most critically acclaimed that year when it was packaged in with the Orange Box. With the official announcement of Portal 2 back in the April edition of Gameinformer, many wait to see whether or not we can get that same experience in a sequel.

Well the waiting won’t be much longer as Valve has officially announced this past week at GamesCom 2010 that Portal 2 will be releasing onto store shelves February 9th, 2011, after it had been officially delayed out of holiday 2010 back during E3. Players can expect more mind-bending Aperture Science puzzles that introduce a few new dynamic elements such as the Excursion funnel, repulsion gel, and the “ariel faith plate.” A decently longer single player campaign has also been promised, as well as a full-fledged cooperative mode.

You might remember this past E3 when Valve co-founder Gabe Newell announced that Valve would be developing and releasing Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3. Given the heavy criticism and lack of support Valve gave towards Sony’s platform since the start of the current generation, many found this as a surprise. It was also announced that the PlayStation 3 version of the game would support various Steamworks technology such as steam cloud and automatic updates. Newell also went as far as to say that the PS3 version of Portal 2 would be the “best version on any console”, though please note that he did choose his words carefully.
