Turn off the Lights

Release Dates Set for ‘Mockingjay’ Parts 1 and 2

The second film in the "Hunger Games" franchise, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has barely started casting, but neither Lionsgate nor the general public have any doubt of the success of Suzanne Collins' books on the big screen, so the studio has already marked down a pair of release dates for the series finale, a two-part split of the final novel in the trilogy, Mockingjay.

Following in the steps of The Twilight Saga, both films will be released on Fridays before Thanksgiving on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015. What that means is we'll get a "Hunger Games" installment on the same weekend every year for three years in a row, as Catching Fire arrives on November 22, 2013. It also means that production on the "Mockingjay" films will start before the second film even hits theaters.

With such a quick turnaround in the works from the second to the final two films, it's hard to imagine that Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence would not direct The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. If there's no word from Lawrence or Lionsgate in the coming months, expect an official announcement as soon as filming wraps on Catching Fire sometime this fall/winter.
