Rodriguez Says ‘Sin City 2’ Has Budget, Waiting on Script

Robert Rodriguez sent San Diego buzzing when he told fans at Comic-Con that if a sequel to the hit noir action film Sin City happens at all, "it's going to happen this year." Now the producer/director reveals that the film has the money and could theoretically begin filming as soon as the script is in place.

Rodriguez revealed the update in an interview with We Got This Covered:

"Sin City 2 is going good, we’re just finishing the script for that, we already got the money. We have everything we need so we can just start shooting as soon as we get the pages. And it’s the same thing for Machete 2. We’ve already got the budget, just waiting for the script. As soon as we’re finished writing we get to start the shoot."

Frank Miller has been adapting the script from his story A Dame to Kill For in addition to a couple new stories as well. So hurry up, Frank! Normally a film's budget doesn't get locked in until after a script gets in place, but perhaps the film will go through Rodriguez's new Quick Draw Productions and therefore they know they want to spend on this film.

Miller could be writing with a budget in mind as well; it's hard to imagine the budget would be that much higher than the estimated $40 million spent on the first film unless the talent gets more expensive. Considering the first film made a modest $158 million worldwide, the sequel would have to be cheap as well in order to be a success. Years of anticipation, however, would like lead to a bigger gross considering how well viewers and critics received Sin City.
