Shane Black a top choice for helming “Iron Man 3”

Here’s one to make an indie fanboy melt: Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon) is apparently a serious contender to fill the directing duties left vacant by original Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau.

Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that Black is “far from a sure thing” and that other filmmakers are being approached, though no other names have been dropped in regards to directing. What is known is that Black has been taking meetings with various Marvel and Disney (which owns Marvel, in case you missed that) executives to give his take on the next installment in the film franchise. What does help Black is his previous experience working with star Robert Downey Jr. on Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang back in 2005. Since Downey Jr.’s contact gives him approval on who will take the reins for Iron Man 3, it can’t hurt Black’s chances.

If Black were to be brought on as director, he would be drafting a script for Iron Man 3 as well. He could easily match the tone already established by Favreau and Downey Jr. in the first two “Iron Man” films, as he is known for his rapid-fire humor, prevalent not only in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang but in the “Lethal Weapon” series and The Long Kiss Goodnight (which starred Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson). Again, Black’s involvement is not confirmed but that does not make it an uninteresting possibility for the franchise that, while globally successful, took a small hit in positive word of mouth with the second installment.

Iron Man 3  has been slotted for release on May 3, 2013.
