“Spider-Man” reboot baddie to be The Lizard

It’s not official news, but it didn’t take long for someone in the movie blogosphere to get inside information on the true identity of the villain that Rhys Ifans will play in the “Spider-Man” reboot from director Marc Webb. According to TheWrap, that villain — which Sony announced just days ago as undisclosed — will indeed be Dr. Curt Connors, also known as The Lizard.

Connors was originally played by supporting actor Dylan Baker in Sam Raimi’s trilogy, leading many to believe the actor would some point rise to a starring role, but he will forever remain shortchanged. Baker’s part was small, but considering how likable he was in limited screen time, the affect of a Lizard storyline on his take on the character would’ve likely been terrific. Ifans, however, should bring some unique charisma to the role and an interesting chemistry with star Andrew Garfield.

According to the Marvel wiki, Connors was a medic in the war (World War II I believe) when an explosive blast forced him to have his arm amputated. Unable to readjust to civilian life, he became obsessed with researching reptilian DNA and discovering a way he could regenerate his arm. After creating a serum and a successful animal test, Connors tried it on himself, but he mutated into the Lizard, a Hulk-like character who can change back and forth but not willfully.

Rumors had swirled around the Lizard, especially after Webb tipped his hand when he said in the press release:

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

Sure, this could be a deliberate ploy by Sony/Columbia Pictures to take heat off the rumor mill by having “people close to the project” break some news (and highly speculated news as most sites were guessing Lizard) about the villain, but it seems to make too much sense. Venom was at one point part of the discussion as well, but those rumors had faltered of late.
