Spielberg Wants Chris Hemsworth for ‘Robopocalypse’

When Marvel Studios cast him as Thor, people were upset True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård didn't get the part. Since then, Chris Hemsworth has quickly become one of the biggest and most bankable young action stars on the planet, and now, Steven Spielberg wants him.

Deadline reports that the famed director has met with Hemsworth and wants him to star in his newest film, an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse. The story follows the aftermath of a robot uprising and the survivors who attempt to stop it. It's told in a similar fashion to World War Z, the film version of which Paramount is busy trying to salvage.

The last year has been nothing short of epic of Hemsworth. After the success of Thor, he nabbed the latter title role in Snow White and the Hunstman, which has turned out to be one of the bigger box-office surprises of this summer. He then appeared in the sleeper hit The Cabin in the Woods, which was written and directed by Drew Goddard, who wrote the first treatment of Robopocalypse. Hemsworth also filmed the Formula 1 biopic Rush for Ron Howard. Oh yeah, and there's The Avengers.

Adding another big international tentpole would be a tall order for Hemsworth. He films Thor: The Dark World in the coming months, and Universal seems rather intent on a Snow White and the Huntsman sequel. Robopocalypse is scheduled for April 25, 2014, and would likely look to start filming early next year.

Hemsworth will next appear this November in the remake of Red Dawn, a project that was shelved for the last two years while MGM sorted out its financial situation. That same month, Spielberg will release his anticipated biopic, Lincoln.
