Sports Movie Madness: Football Region Championship

Welcome back to Player Affinity's Sports Movie Madness! Last week, we held Round 2 of voting to determine the best sports movie ever. You voted, and we've got your results, as well as the "Screen 16" matchup for this week, which will determine the best football movie ever.

But first, let's recap for those of you new to the tournament. In the Sports Movie Madness tournament, there are seven sports and one mega-category of miscellaneous sports, so eight regions total. This is the Football Region. Below are the two football films remaining after two rounds of voting, and it's your job is to pick which movie you deem worthy of winning the title of Best Football Movie. Simply enter a comment by Sunday at 5:00 pm with the film you think should win the matchup! After a winner is determined in this region, the other regional champions will face off against one another until we have an overall winner!

It's clear we underestimated your love for Adam Sandler. The Waterboy squeaked into the tournament as an 8 seed, but has proven a tough out, defeating the likes of Rudy and The Longest Yard (1974). This week, the film faces its toughest test: a hungry 2 seed in Remember the Titans that has earned 17 votes to its opponents combined 4. So what will it be: Comedy or drama? Sandler or Denzel? The favorite or the underdog? Leave us a comment and find out next week!

THE RESULTS
8 The Waterboy def. 5 The Longest Yard (1974)
2 Remember the Titans def. 3 Friday Night Lights

ROUND 2

2 Remeber the Titans vs. 8 The Waterboy

The Waterboy is simply vintage Adam Sandler. The story of an athletically gifted, mentally shorthanded Southern boy, it’s full of your typical Sandler humor and plenty of hilarious cameos from the usual Sandler suspects. And if that type of humor is your thing, this underdog could cruise through the bracket.

Remember the Titans is one of those films that everyone watched a dozen times in high school. Who doesn’t love Denzel Washington’s Coach Boone? Or the unlikely partnership between Julius and Bertier? Or the funky way the team struts onto the field for every game? It might not be groundbreaking cinema, but there’s no denying its ability to uplift and entertain.
