‘Star Trek 2’ Will Be in 3D, Arrives May 2013

Jonesin' to rejoin the U.S.S. Enterprise? After Super 8 caused some delays in pre-production, J.J. Abrams and the original 2009 Star Trek cast and crew will return to action next year and Paramount has chosen May 17, 2013 as the day to reveal what the next voyage has in store for them.

According to Deadline, Star Trek 2 will also film in 3D, marking the first time Abrams will have done so on one of his films. The untitled sequel was written by Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

Paramount intially hoped the film would be ready for a June 29, 2012 release, but delays forced them to swap it out for G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The studio then sat and waited for some motion in the Summer 2013 schedule, which finally occurred this week as Sony has pushed director Roland Emmerich's next sci-fi project Singularity to November 1, 2013. The Independence Day director was set to film his story of a young man whose body is made entirely of nanobots in March but according to THR decided he needed to revise the script first.

As it stands (though the arrival of this surefire hit may change things), the Star Trek sequel will open a week after Guillermo del Toro's monster movie Pacific Rim and two weeks after Iron Man 3. It will face competition the following week from Universal's sixth "Fast & Furious" movie.
