Steinfeld, Lawrence and Breslin on the list for “Hunger Games”

Breakthrough stars Jennifer Lawrence and Hailee Steinfeld have something in common other than their new status as Oscar nominees. Both of the newly anointed Oscar nominees have their eyes set on the leading role of Katniss Everdeen in an upcoming adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games.

According to Lainey Gossip, Lawrence met to read for the role:

“Sources confirmed to me exclusively that [Lawrence] read for it and they loved her. So much. Like no one else they’ve seen has even come close to what she delivered. The way it was described to me: ‘Jennifer really went for it and she blew them away.’ I’m told a deal is being hammered out right now. And they’re almost there. Some details still need to be finalized, and anything can happen where negotiations are concerned, but they’re close. Lionsgate apparently really wants her.”

However, this past Sunday at the Academy Awards, Hailee Steinfeld chatted quickly with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, saying:

“I met with Gary Ross and it’s definitely something we’re taking one day at a time and making sure everything is in place, everything’s ready."

Oh, and it gets better. Variety confirms that not only Lawrence and Steinfeld seek this role; Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin also looks to nab the role of Katniss.

An unfortunate catch comes with the knowledge that the role has been limited by race. According to Cinema Blend, Katniss is never identified as being of a particular ethnicity by Collins, but “Caucasian” is the first description on the casting call.

So, which of the three actresses gets the role? Breslin has Innocence and the animated flick The Wild Bunch due out next year. Lawrence stars as Mystique in X-Men: First Class later this year, and Steinfeld is set to lead the film Forgotten.

If I had to guess, I’d say that Steinfeld gets the role. She’s more suited for it than Breslin and Lawrence if there ends up being more than one “Hunger Games” film.

Stay tuned for further updates on The Hunger Games.
