Stephen Colbert’s Return to Truthiness on Late Show

This past September Stephen Colbert replaced the legendary David Letterman as host of CBS’s Late Show. Colbert took his talents to the Tiffany Network after a highly successful nine-year run on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. Fans of Colbert’s bombastic pundit character, who was retired when Colbert left Comedy Central, were treated to his long-awaited return on Monday night’s Late Show episode. With the aid of old friend Jon Stewart, Colbert “found” the only person who could make sense of Donald Trump’s candidacy for president: right-wing commentator Stephen Colbert. Armed with Captain America’s shield and a sword, Colbert was back on TV after a nearly two-year absence off the grid. late-show-stephen-colbert The return of Colbert Report era Colbert on Monday’s Late Show kicks off two weeks of coverage of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. It was Colbert’s coverage of these conventions while a correspondent for Stewart’s The Daily Show that helped make him a household name. In a follow-up segment, Colbert appeared in character to deliver "The Word," a popular Colbert Report segment. In it, Colbert highlighted the differences between “truthiness,” a word he coined to signify the feeling that a false statement is true, and "Trumpiness," which defines the qualities exhibited by the Republican front runner.
