‘Sword in the Stone’ Live-Action Remake in the Works

"The Disney animated classic is getting the latest live-action treatment"
Disney has been on a live-action kick as of late with taking their classic animated stories and adapting them into live-action feature movies. Their most recent example is the success of this past spring's live-action version of Cinderella, starring Downton Abbey'Lily James as the title character. The movie went on to gross an impressive $539.5 million worldwide. So, naturally, the studio looks to continue to spring the well of its own library. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is revisiting its 1963 animated fantasy The Sword in the Stone, putting into development a live-action remake.

Brian Cogman, a writer-producer on HBO’s fantasy Game of Thrones, has been chosen to write the script for the project. No word yet on who will direct the newest feature. The movie, which was the final theatrical release before Walt Disney’s death, tells the story of a young King Arthur who is being mentored by Merlin. The feature is loosely based on T.H. White’s novel of the same name and later became part of White’s multi-book landmark Arthurian fantasy The Once and Future King. Disney has live-action remakes of Beauty and the BeastThe Jungle Book, and Dumbo, just to name a few, in the works. Audiences will see if these movies will continue the winning streak that studio has been experiencing in mining their classic library for a new generation of moviegoers.
