Turn off the Lights

The First Trailer for ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Storms the Internet

There have been many pretenders to be crowned as king of the epic fantasy genre, but the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has emerged for Middle Earth to push away its rivals.

Peter Jackson returns for a fifth time to Middle Earth and it is clear the focus of the movie will be about Bilbo and the Dwarves as they journey through Mirkwood, battle hostile elves and to The Lonely Mountain to face off against Smaug. For fans of the novel and the previous Lord of the Rings movies there are plenty of titbits, including the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas (and he is much less tolerate towards Dwarves then in this movie).

Lost’s Evangeline Lilly is given prominence as Tauriel, an original character for the movie who serves as the Chief of the Guards for the Elvenking. She is certainly filling the warrior-woman role for the movie with her archery skills and eagerness for the elves to fight against the raising evil.

This trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a more serious affair compared to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s lighter, comic tone. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug wants to up the ante with the trailer highlighting a battle in Mirkwood and showcasing more dark visuals within Mirkwood and when going to the Lonely Mountain. We also get our first proper look of the dragon Smaug. However this movie is a very CGI heavy affair as we get to see how light footed Elves are and see the barrels during the Dwarves’ escape

But this trailer is lacking much focus on the characters from ‘An Unexpected Journey’, instead focusing on the newer characters. It is going to a much better expansion of the novel as we see more the world, conflicts and history of Middle-Earth. It should wet the appetites of Tolkien and Jackson fans.
