‘The Theory of Everything’s’ Anthony McCarten to write ‘Darkest Hour’

The Stephen Hawking bio-pic The Theory of Everything is one of this year's leading awards contenders, earning five Academy Award and eleven BAFTA nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Anthony McCarten. The Theory of Everything has made $82.1 Million from a $15 Million budget and McCarten is now working on his next project. Speaking to Deadline McCarten has relieved his next project will be Darkest Hour, a World War II drama about Winston Churchill's early days as Britain's Prime Minister in 1940 where many senior figures urged him to make peace with Nazi Germany, effectively making them a puppet state for the Third Reich. McCarten tells Deadline:
“We aim to present a Churchill you haven’t seen before, a new portrait that shows all his famous strengths but also adds new dimensions, such as the grave doubts he privately harbored, the dark moods that would seize him unexpectedly and his fear of failure, a driving force that is often is left out of any discussion of the man.”
winston churchill McCarten will reteam with Working Title Films' Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan and producer Lisa Bruce. McCarten is also adapting Nick Davies' book Hack Attack: The Inside Story of How The Truth Caught Up With Rupert Murdoch for George Clooney and Sony about how The Sun newspaper fished for stories by hacking into cell phones of celebrities, politicians, the Royal Family and even victims of major crimes.
