Ubisoft is making a lot of film-loving gamers happy. Things are rolling right along on the Assassin's Creed movie starring the awesome Michael Fassbender, and now the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell movie has snagged The Dark Knight Rises star (and equally as awesome) Tom Hardy.
Ubisoft is in preliminary talks with Warner Bros. and Paramount to partner on the project, and undoubtedly talks will continue to go well with Hardy in the lead. Hardy will play Sam Fisher, "a highly-trained special operative in a fictional black-ops operation called Echelon."
Eric Warren Singer (The International) will adapt the game for the big screen. Singer wrote the highly touted Black List script American Bullshit, which is The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell's next project, a film that also has some serious A-list stars in Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner.
Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had only glowing things to say about both Hardy and Singer:
"Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills ... His involvement in the 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell' movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and ... we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story ... while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans."
Ubisoft could start to change the stigma surrounding video game adaptations at the rate its going with Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed. We at Entertainment Fuse are more interested in this project going forward, that's for sure. Undoubtedly there will be lots of talented directors interested in the project as well.
