Trailer Round-Up – June 18th, 2016

"Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Pete's Dragon, Moana"
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Directed by Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond), and written by Zwick, Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2, The Equalizer), Marshall Herskovitz (Love & Other Drugs, The Last Samurai), Jack Reacher: Never Go Back sees Tom Cruise reprise the role of the title character based on Lee Child's books. The sequel to the 2012 Jack Reacher movie also stars Cobie Smulders. At the time of writing, the only trailer available for the film is the one recut for an Entertainment Tonight segment, with bits of narration and parts of a Cobie Smulders interview. It's a little unfortunate, but the trailer appears intact for the most part. It looks promising, with Cruise and Smulders on the run, with nothing but their wits and wills to survive and figure out who's trying to frame Smulders' character Susan Turner. It's a familiar premise, but with that level of talent at the helm, familiar doesn't necessarily mean boring. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is scheduled for release on October 21, 2016. Pete's Dragon Directed by David Lowery, Walt Disney's Pete's Dragon is a modern reimagining of the classic 1977 movie of the same name. Using a blend of live-action and CGI, Pete's Dragon tells the story of a young orphaned boy named Pete who shares a unique bond with a dragon named Elliot. With a strong cast that includes the likes of Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard and Karl Urban, along with some pretty impressive special effects that help bring Elliot to life, this looks like another strong family friendly adventure from Disney. It's a little weird to have the line "some secrets are too big to keep" pop up right after a shot of the dragon turning invisible, but apart from that, the trailer has no real missteps. Judging by this trailer, the worst case scenario for Pete's Dragon is an entertaining, if formulaic kids movie - which is fine. Pete's Dragon is set for release on August 12, 2016. Moana Walt Disney Animation Studios have debuted the first trailer for their upcoming feature Moana. Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho), an adventurous teenager, meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) and the two embark on an epic journey across the ocean to fulfil an ancient quest and discover themselves. This is a relatively short teaser trailer that oddly enough focuses primarily on Dwayne Johnson's character Maui and barely features the title character. It's a good first impression and it's clear that Maui will most likely be the comic relief, but it is a little strange. Nevertheless, as a teaser, this does its job - it gives us a brief slice of the movie that's enough to be enticing with its interesting characters and gorgeous animation, without really giving anything away. It's hard to think that Disney will slip up when they have such a strong track record with CGI animated feature films. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid), Moana is scheduled for release on November 23, 2016.
