Trailer Tracker: Blue Valentine, The Way Back and more

Has it been six days or seven? Well to tell you tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But this being Trailer Tracker, the most amazing movie feature on the Internet that will blow your mind clear out your ears, you’ve got to ask your self one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? Don’t worry movie-lover because it is your lucky day: Trailer Tracker is back. Continuing our slow decline of big-name trailers we first look at the clip for Sundance darling Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. We then find The Way Back with Colin Farrell, Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess in the prison escape drama. Next is the low-budget remake of the equally low-budget 1970s thriller And Soon the Darkness and finally, yet again due to a lack of new clips, we take a look at a pissed off Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the second clip for Faster. So go ahead, make my day … and watch Trailer Tracker.

Blue Valentine

You would be hard-pressed to find two bigger faces of independent cinema and to have them team up in a movie would be many peoples dream, but yes Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are together in Blue Valentine, a melancholy look at the highs and lows of a married couple over the course of their relationship. Both of these actors have showed their chops in projects such as Half Nelson and Brokeback Mountain (for which Gosling and Williams received Oscar noms respectively) and even with the quivering state of indie films these days, I have high hopes they can infuse real humanity into what looks like quirky, off-kilter execution. Blue Valentine was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, eventually losing out to Winter’s Bone, but carried huge buzz throughout the festival. The trailer, like many of its ilk, is very slight and exposes little about the nature of the plot, setting, etc. It's currently battling an NC-17 rating.

The Way Back

Prison escape dramas have always been a favorite of mine. Much like robbing a bank or engaging in a high-speed car chase down the highway, it is one of those inexplicably alluring taboos -- or maybe that’s just me. The Way Back is the true story of a group of soldiers in 1940s Siberia who escape their confines and make a mammoth trek to safety over mountains and deserts. The novel on which the film is based is a true account of Polish army lieutenant SÅ‚awomir Rawicz who made the actual arduous journey. To bolster this tale further are the talents of Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan and Mark Strong as the fleeing inmates and other refugees with director Peter Weir (Master and Commander, The Truman Show) behind the camera. The film is poised for a limited release late December/early January so if you are looking for an epic tale of freedom, well you could start off the new year in worse ways.

And Soon the Darkness

Another film destined for limited release is And Soon the Darkness, an Argentinean-set thriller in which two young American women (Amber Heard and Odette Yustman) become separated, leaving it up to the other to track down her whereabouts. Karl Urban, who it seems is bursting quite nicely into the mainstream also stars as a mysterious man who may not be who he seems. The trailer gives off a vibe reminiscent of exotically set chillers A Perfect Getaway and Touristas, neither of which are a particularly favorable comparison I might add. These types of low-key suspense films, as my label just appraised, tend to shoot under the radar but that certainly does not mean they are not worth a look. Again, to make an unfounded comparison, films like The Ruins can surprise so hope for just that during its late December release.

Faster (Trailer 2)

As is the general consensus of pretty much every action-lover these days, the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is an absolute must for the genre. Once tipped (and deservedly so) as the next big action star, his foray into kids films seemed premature; usually it is not until far into their career tough guys go soft (see Schwarzenegger). Though I painfully admit to enjoying The Tooth Fairy (forever one of my great shames), I for one cannot wait to see this former wrestler toss around some lead again in what looks to be a blood-soaked return for Mr. Johnson.
