TV Show Awards: Jay Malone Edition

I’ve been watching a ton of television lately and I've realized there has been a multitude of great shows this past year and I thought to myself “Why not hand out some Jay Malone Player Affinity awards?” You may ask “Well, is this awards thing actually… a thing?” Well it is sir/ma’am...  it most certainly is. Below are the shows in contention for awards and of course the awards themselves. There are a few shows in there that are still in the middle of their debut season, so I based their performance on the episodes that have been broadcast so far. The awards are for shows that aired from 2009 through mid-2010.

                               Awards

Best Intro

  • Justified Season 1
  • Dexter Season 4
  • True Blood Season 2
  • Pretty Little Liars Season 1

WINNER: True Blood Season 2

Intro songs are a very tough thing to nail, very few shows do it as well as the four listed above. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, they all have their very own specific qualities to them, that makes you either sing them aloud, or silently tap your foot with an inane smile. But nothing could compete with a song focused upon doing Bad Things to people.

 Best New Show

  • Hot in Cleveland Season 1
  • Justified Season 1
  • Modern Family Season 1
  • Community Season 1

WINNER: Justified: Season 1

Justified surprised me. I didn’t think it would be terrible, not at all, but I didn't think there would be anyway I’d be rating it as the best new show. Not only did it give one hell of a season finale, it managed a great set up for the second; something few shows manage to do these days.

Best Comedy

  • Weeds Season 5
  • The Office Season 6
  • Modern Family Season 1
  • C  ommunity Season 1

WINNER: Modern Family Season 1

The concept of Modern Family wasn’t the most original one ever, it was a mockumentary-type show, but instead of featuring people working in an office, it featured one big crazy, yet loving family and from the very first episode, I fell in love with it. The writing, the casting and jokes delivered like bullets from a Machine Gun, there wasn’t a single episode in this debut season that didn’t damn-near leave me in tears of laughter.

Best Drama

  • True Blood Season 2
  • Justified Season 1
  • Dexter Season 4
  • Lost Season 6

WINNER: Dexter Season 4

Let’s be honest, nothing can get much more dramatic than Lost or Justified. However, Dexter, on a consistent basis, would deliver a scene; that one scene which would make you say “Wow. What a show.” And that’s something no other program has been able to do as well as Dexter.

Best Writing

  • Lost Season 6
  • Justified Season 1
  • Dexter Season 4
  • Modern Family Season 1

 WINNER: Justified Season 1

Whether it was the story or the character dialogue, it was all incredibly impressive. There were times when Justified would throw in a bit of comedy here and there and even that was well-written. There’s a not a dull conversation or scene to be had throughout the entire first season of Justified.

Worst Show

  • The Gates Season 1
  • Scoundrels Season 1
  • The Cleveland Show Season 1
  • Scrubs Season 9

WINNE R: The Cleveland Show Season 1

I found the very first episode of The Cleveland Show slightly amusing; it was very Family Guy-esque of course, but still funny. From then on, things just spiraled out of control, with terrible, agonizing jokes uttered throughout each putrid episode. The show began to be an absolute exercise to get through and trust me, there’s many better ways to exercise.

Best New Character

  • Boyd Crowder from Justified Season 1
  • Trinity Killer from Dexter Season 4
  • Raylan Givens from Justified Season 1
  • Phil Dunphy from Modern Family Season 1

WINNER: Boyd Crowder from Justified Season 1

Boyd was… Incredibly freaky. He always seemed very calm, but we all knew that in his mind, he was a very long way from calm; he was fuming to destroy something. But that’s why we all loved him. There were plenty (and I mean plenty) of great new characters on television, but none of them topped Boyd Crowder.

Most Surprising Show

  • Hot in Cleveland Season 1
  • Glee Season 1
  • Modern Family Season 1
  • Pretty Little Liars Season 1

WINNER: Glee Season 1

Let’s lay the cards on the table; the concept of Glee sounds absolutely terrible. A musical TV series centered around teenagers going through high school? Horrible. But with the excellent singing, fine cast of characters, and quite impressive writing, Glee impressed thoroughly. It hit a few rough patches along the way, but Glee was mostly a fun, semi-stupid, yet very good show to watch.

Best Female Character

  • Rita Morgan from Dexter Season 4
  • Sun-Hwa Kwon from Lost Season 6
  • Nancy Botwin from Weeds Season 5
  • Sookie Stackhouse from True Blood Season 2

WINNER: Rita Morgan from Dexter Season 4

I’m sure many people will wonder why I didn’t pick Rita for best actress. It’s not because she’s bad, quite the opposite, it’s because she never had one really strong scene that locked her in as best actress, unlike the actual winner. Though seeing her as a fantastic mother and a slightly confused wife was excellent. You already loved her from the previous seasons and this one just made you love her even more.

Best Male Character

  • Boyd Crowder from Justified Season 1
  • Trinity Killer from Dexter Season 4
  • Dexter Morgan from Dexter Season 4
  • Jacob from Lost Season 6

WINNER: Boyd Crowder from Justified Season 1

He may not have given the best acting performance of all the others, but he did remain the most interesting. It’s incredibly hard for a show to have a character obsessed with religion and not make it an absolute groan-fest when he speaks, but Justified managed well. Not only were his lines very insightful, but they delivered a slight hint of psychosis that left you a bit on edge, but still excited to see what this crazy, immensely entertaining man would do next.

Best Actress

  • Julie Benz (Rita Morgan from Dexter Season 4)
  • Mary Louise Parker (Nancy Botwin from Weeds Season 5)
  • Joelle Carter (Ava Crowder from Justified Season 1)
  • Yunjin Kim (Sun-Hwa Kwon from Lost Season 6)

WINNER: Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon from Lost Season 6

Sun has always been an amazing character, but this year the ante is upped ferociously. She had plenty of scenes which really showed off her skill as an actress, all the way up to the tear-jerking scene involving her and Jin.

Best Actor

  • Michael C. Hall (Dexter from Dexter Season 4)
  • Walton Goggins (Boyd Crowder from Justified Season 1)
  • Timothy Olyphant (Raylan Givens from Justified Season 1)
  • John Lithgow (Trinity Killer from Dexter Season 4

WINNER: Michael C. Hall from Dexter Season 4

Phenomenal. The only word I can use to describe Michael C. Hall’s acting as Dexter; the dad, husband, and serial killer. The times where Dexter is just lounging around the house with his step-kids, are always interestingly portrayed by Michael C. Hall. But things really heat up when Dexter has some kind of problem. The stress on Michael’s face immerses you further into the story with each bloodstained moment. If you can point out one moment in Season 4 where Michael C. Hall’s performance wasn’t mesmerizing and unforgettable, I’ll sell both my kidneys and buy you a car.

Best Season/Series Finale

  • Justified Season 1
  • Lost Season 6
  • Glee Season 1
  • Dexter Season 4

WINNER: Lost Season 6’s The End

It was tough not to hand this one to Dexter, which had the first ending to a season that really hit me emotionally, but Lost’s ending was truly incredible. It didn’t depress me, in fact it made all the depression I’ve ever experienced whilst watching the show instantly vanish. I thought it was the perfect ending to one of the best shows to ever air on television. Lost will never, ever be forgotten.

Best Show

  • Dexter Season 4
  • Lost Season 6
  • Justified Season 1
  • True Blood Season 2
  • Modern Family Season 1

WINNER: Dexter Season 4

This season, from beginning to finish, was amazing. There was not a single episode that I didn’t love. Michael C. Hall combined with John Lithgow, bring nothing but excellent acting and some of the most memorable back-and-forth conversations to date. It didn’t matter what character was on screen, I was always excited to watch and knew that I’d be entertained thoroughly; Which I always was. From start to finish, I loved every second of it. Except for maybe that finale, that nearly killed me. Not only the best season of Dexter, but one of the best seasons of any television show that I’ve had the privilege to watch.
