Next Assassin's Creed Has New Hero, New Location, New Time Period

In the same vein as Activision with its cash cow Call of Duty, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated that the next installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise will replace Connor with a new hero, America with a new location, the Revolutionary War with a new time period, and an all new team taking the reins.


Guillemot also stated the new game will be released sometime before April 2014 and will be another major leap forward for the franchise. "It is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the product," Guillemot said, "each getting several years to make their versions of an Assassin's Creed game." It seems that Ubisoft is following the Activision blueprint of letting a number of teams work on a franchise that has made the company millions.

When I reviewed Assassin's Creed 3 back in November, I was impressed by a number of things, but the overall experience was a disappointment. Now, after three years development time on Assassin's Creed 3, Ubisoft wants each year to have a new game. To be honest, unless they innovate greatly with each passing year, which franchises like Call of Duty and Madden have proven is hard to do, Assassin's Creed will become a stale and repetitive franchise that started out with so much promise. It is unfortunate to see that companies are more interested in money than in making a spectacular game, but so are the times. Only time will tell, though, if Ubisoft can pull off a yearly franchise and make each installment different and more interesting than the last.
