Streets of Rage: What Could Have Been

Footage leaked this morning of a prototype build of a now canceled remake of Streets of Rage. Developed by Ruffian Games, the crew behind 2010's Crackdown 2 was at one point making a 3D remake of the popular Sega franchise from the early 90s.
 

A video of the canceled prototype has been uploaded to YouTube by Ruffian Games' business and management chief Gary Liddon, who also offers some insight onto the former project:

"It was something we built very rapidly and represents pre-pre-pre-pre (lots of pre) pre-Alpha quality," Liddon said. "Even so it has a certain charm."

"What's the story behind it all? Like a lot of developers we work on a lot of different prototypes, they're just not usually shown in public. In this case an older version of the same video was leaked last week which came as a bit of a surprise if I'm honest. As it had no sound I thought there wouldn't be any harm sharing a version with audio. Beyond that there's not a lot more I can say unfortunately :)"

It is interesting to note that this would have been a XBLA or PSN title, and perhaps by this video leaking it will generate new interest in remaking Streets of Rage. As of right now, no one has interest, nor can Gary Liddon explain why it was canceled, as he answered on his Twitter account he doesn't know why the game was canceled.
