Warner Bros. Acquires Film Rights for Comic ‘The Red Star’

Warner Bros. is currently in the process of acquiring the rights to Christian Gossett’s fantasy comic series The Red Star thanks to a turnaround from Universal. Neal Moritz and Jason Netter are on board to produce through Original Films and Kickstart Productions, respectively. Moritz produced recent hits like Battle: Los Angeles and Fast Five; Netter took production duties for the well-received Wanted starring Angelina Jolie.

The Red Star
, which burst onto the scene in 1999, features an alternate USSR and Afghanistan in which a USSR soldier and his wife must stop the evils of a former ruler. This alternate universe comes complete with magic and advanced technology.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog relays that no one’s attached for writing and directing duties just yet. Timur Bekmambetov was set to direct a script from Matthew Sand while the project was at Universal.
