Xbox 360 Not As Popular As PS3, Latest Figures Reveal

New figures have been released which show that since the consoles inception in 2006, Sony’s Playstation 3 has outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360, by a margin of 1 million units.  According to a report by International Data Corporation, the PS3 overtook the Xbox 360 in worldwide shipping figures last December, bringing the grand total of PS3’s shipped to 77 million with Microsoft’s console playing second fiddle, with 76 million sales.

These latest figures, which came to our attention via an article on the report by Games Industry International, will undoubtedly come as a blow to Microsoft, who’s console was released a full year before the PS3, in November 2005.

Now, with both gaming giants looking to release next gen consoles in the near future, the Xbox makers will want to impress with their new 720 model, which rumors suggest we might get a glimpse of at this year's E3.

The article also suggests that despite the digital age that we are currently living in, “Discs will still remain the console game revenue mainstay for years to come.” Lewis Ward, the IDC’s research manager of their gaming service also stated that, “With the advent of eighth-generation consoles, starting with the Wii U, historical norms strongly imply that game disc revenue will stop bleeding in 2013 and rise substantively in 2014.” So, what are your thoughts on the recent figures? How can Microsoft ensure that the next Xbox doesn't fall short to the Playstation 4? Plus, do you think discs will become a thing of the past, thanks to this new digital era? Let us know what you think.
