2011 Oscar Nominations: Academy voters crown “The King’s Speech” with 12

Cinephiles the world over woke up especially early to hear Academy president Tom Sherak and Oscar winner Mo’Nique announce this year’s Academy Award nominations.

The King’s Speech leads the way with twelve nominations. The Tom Hooper-helmed drama nabbed mentions for Picture, Director, Actor, and Original Screenplay. Joel and Ethan Coen’s take on True Grit landed ten nominations, making the cut in Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. The Social Network, David Fincher’s drama about the founding of Facebook, proved to be a hit with the critics and picked up eight nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay.

The big shock of the nominations happened when Christopher Nolan wasn't named as one of the five Best Director nominees for
Inception. Another surprising exclusions came in Documentary Feature where the arguable front-runner Waiting for "Superman" was snubbed. Many were stunned when the Original Song race didn't feature Diane Warren's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," a power ballad performed by Cher in Burlesque.

As for what we might see the Academy do in regards to Best Picture, it's essentially between two films: The Social Network and The King's Speech
The Social Network maintained Best Picture front-runner status from the time it topped the National Board of Review’s list to its surprise Golden Globe win. However, The King’s Speech upset for the very crucial Daryl F. Zanuck Award from the Producers Guild of America. Given the film’s nomination tally, it might be the one to beat now.
