Turn off the Lights

‘Carrie’ Remake Adds Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday

Back in March, Chloë Moretz hopped on board to star in Kimberley Peirce’s remake of Carrie in the title role originated by Sissy Spacek. Later, Julianne Moore signed on as the girl’s psychotic mother, a role originated by Piper Laurie. Now the film aims to round out its cast.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Judy Greer and Portia Doubleday have signed on for the remake. The actresses will respectively star as Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher who edifies Carrie, and Chris Hargensen, the cruel, popular girl responsible for the psychologically abused telepath’s violent rampage. Golden Globe nominee Nancy Allen and Tony Award winner Betty Buckley played those characters in the original film, respectively. Earlier, MGM and Screen Gems set Gabriella Wilde to play Sue Snell, a popular girl originally played by Academy Award nominee Amy Irving who regrets the cruelty she’s shown towards Carrie.

Greer is an extremely versatile actress, having turned in brilliant comedic and dramatic work over the years. With only a minimal catalogue of films behind them, however, the stars of Doubleday (Youth in Revolt) and Wilde (The Three Musketeers) aren’t quite as bright, but these roles could help their careers take flight if the movie is a success.

The original Carrie, based on Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name, arrived in theaters in 1976. Directed by Brian De Palma, Spacek and Laurie received Academy Award nominations for their riveting performances. Peirce’s remake is set to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.
