Christopher McQuarrie accepts his ‘Mission: Impossible’

It has been speculated for a long time that Christopher McQuarrie would the next director to tackle the Mission: Impossible series. Yesterday McQuarrie finally confirmed he is going to helm the movie with a simple tweet saying ‘Mission Accepted’.

Speculation of McQuarrie’s involvement with Mission: Impossible 5 started in November 2012 before the release of Jack Reacher and it has grown ever since. Jack Reacher was an entertaining action-thriller which showcased McQuarrie’s abilities as an action director and of course stars one Tom Cruise.

McQuarrie is best known as the screenwriter of The Usual Suspects which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He has also written Valkryie and the upcoming Edge of Tomorrow, both starring Mr Cruise. His other directional credit is 2000 crime drama The Way of the Gun.

All of the Mission: Impossible movies have been helmed by a different director and one of the great strengths of the series has been they all have been stylistic different. All of them are stand-alone adventures. McQuarrie is certainly a good choice for to direct the next movie due to his working relationship with Cruise and hopefully he can add some grit to the series.

Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce is currently writing the screenplay for Mission: Impossible 5 but do not be surprised if McQuarrie does a rewrite of some sort. Cruise has left The Man From U.N.C.L.E. so he can focus on producing Mission: Impossible 5.

Mission: Impossible 5 is currently pencilled in for a 2015 release date.
