DC Comics Gets Into The Halloween Spirit
DC is tapping into their mystical side with this new round of announcements. Over the past two days they’ve confirmed two new books that show that they are willing to break from the pack. That show that the “Dark Line” of the “New 52” isn’t as stunted or as dead as some may have assumed besides some creative changes post-“Forever Evil: Blight”. These two being:
Trinity of Sin by J.M. DeMatteis and Yvel Guichet and
Klarion the Witch-Boy by Ann Nocenti and Trevor McCarthy.
Trinity of Sin is, of course, the long awaited and long overdue team book that pits The Phantom Stranger, The Question, and Pandora together against the forces of dark magic. DeMatteis hopes to dig into The Question’s mysterious background history and to draw in new readers. He promises that the first arc is new reader friendly, but fans of his
Phantom Stranger run should be on the lookout for this story as it more or less continues the Stranger’s personal narrative. The
Pandora series wasn't that hot, but neither was
Phantom Stranger until DeMatteis reared his head, so expectations are high. This series drops in October and it should be fun to see the strained character dynamics if not the not-that-great Guichet art.
Klarion the Witchboy is the debut comic in the “New 52” for Seven Soldiers fan-favorite, well, Klarion the Witchboy. Ann Nocenti describes the series as a “mix of sci-fi, horror and mysticism”. She’s joined by top-tier artist Trevor McCarthy who is pretty much the main draw of this book so far. Ann Nocenti’s work for DC in the past few years,
Catwoman and
Green Arrow to name two, has not been well-received so fans should be cautious when approaching this book. Of course, the draw of Klarion as a character might keep it buoyant for a few issues if not good. As with
Trinity of Sin,
Klarion drops this October – making for a double feature Halloween.
So, DC Comics has turned their eye toward the magic side of their universe with this two books. Clearly testing the water the continued interest in that side hinges on how these are received. For the hope of DC’s mystical aspects I hope they are good enough to garner a new fanbase. Thoughts and comments would be appreciated below.
