Dexter to Conclude After Eighth Season

Though its multi-season renewal last year was a strong sign that Dexter was coming to an end, it has now been officially confirmed by executive producer Sara Colleton that season eight will definitely be the show’s last.

Series co-star Jennifer Carpenter had previously declared her intentions to only film eight seasons of the Showtime drama and now Colleton has confirmed that it has been the plan for a while now. “[That end date] was definite,” Colleton said. “We wanted to end it this year [after seven years] but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it’s going to end. Next year will definitely be the last year of Dexter. Absolutely.”

Colleton added that the show’s writing team already know how the series will end. “We don’t know what the final scene is, but we know where [the show is] going,” Colleton said. “We know now exactly how it’s going to end.” She further explained that Dexter should conclude before it becomes “old and stale.” “I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show,” she claimed. “I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end.”

Dexter returns to Showtime from its seventh season premiere on Sunday, September 30 at 9/8c. Check out the most recent promo below:
