Future of DC Film Includes “Justice League” and a “Batman” Reboot

For the longest time, comic book distributor Marvel has bested its rival DC in the motion picture department in regards to continuity with characters. Marvel releases both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor later this year, while DC’s The Green Lantern also hits theaters before year’s end.

While Marvel will release its (potential) magnum opus The Avengers next year, DC looks to up the ante with its motion picture releases. Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros.’ film department, discussed plans for the future of DC in film with The Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex blog.

Robinov revealed that his main priority at the moment is getting a film based on superhero team the Justice League, comprised of Batman, Green Lantern, and other notable DC heroes, to theaters in 2013. A script for that one is being written, as are screenplays for movies based on the characters of The Flash and Wonder Woman.

All of that sounds promising to some degree, but then Robinov drops a bomb on us. In regards to Batman, here’s what he had to say:

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

It’s obvious that Robinov wants to cash in on the superhero craze before we get another Batman and Robin to temporarily kill the genre, especially with The Avengers hitting theaters just next year. However, I’m really unsure how DC will be able to handle this. Though DC has claim to Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, the continuity that Marvel has just isn’t there. But there's no Justice League without Batman, so to include Batman in a 2013 film means Nolan and Thomas will have to decide quickly, from a producing standpoint, where to take the character post-The Dark Knight Rises and post-Christian Bale.

How do you feel about what Jeff Robinov has planned for the future of DC comics in film?
