FX Picks Up Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain”

FX has announced that the network has ordered a 13-episode premiere season of The Strain, a vampire drama from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse. The series, which is based on the book trilogy of the same name from del Toro and Hogan, will star Cory Stoll who was most recently seen as a doomed Congressman in over his head on Netflix’s House of Cards. The Strain focuses on Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), who is an epidemiologist in New York and is tasked with managing an outbreak of an outbreak that has distinct ties an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. The book series places great emphasis on vampirism as the result of a virus rather than treating the condition as the source of romanticism, as it is often treated in pop culture. The series is expected to begin shooting in Toronto this month, and FX has set the series for launch in July of 2014. Additional cast members include Sean Astin, Mía Maestro, and Kevin Durand.
