Game Play Theater Festival Returns for the Fourth Year

The Brick Theater in Brooklyn is pleased to announce the fourth annual Game Play festival, taking place from July 6–28, 2012 in Brooklyn, New York. This year’s festival will once again feature cutting-edge works that lie at the intersection of video gaming and performance. Of special note is a show called That Cute Radioactive Couple, written and directed by Player Affinity's own Charles Battersby.

That Cute Radioactive Couple is a dark comedy that is both a play and a video game. The live performance premiers July 7, then the story continues in a video game where audiences can explore locations seen on stage, and follow the trail of the characters to learn what happens after the events of the play in an interactive adventure featuring voice work by actors from the show.

Ray was prepared for the apocalypse, but he wasn’t ready to share old his fallout shelter with his new wife, Jane. When nuclear war strikes, this snarky couple find themselves trapped in a bunker built for one. Inspired by post-apocalyptic and dystopian video games like Fallout and Bioshock, this dark comedy has bittersweet fun with end of the world.

The second half of That Cute Radioactive Couple is a free downloadable mod for Fallout: New Vegas. This mod will allow players to explore the bunker from the show, hear messages from the characters, interact with objects seen onstage and ultimately learn what happened to Jane and Ray. It can be played by anyone with a full copy of Fallout: New Vegas and will be released after the play opens.

That Cute Radioactive Couple is written and directed by Charles Battersby, starring Len Rella*, Sam Robison and Mary Wertntz. With game design by Charles Battersby.

It is performed on a triple bill with Rock, Paper Scissors by Richard Lovejoy and The Sequel by Kathryn Funkhouser. In Rock, Paper Scissors, a simple evening of board games and soup is thrown into chaos before it can even get off the ground.  In The Sequel  “Apocalypse Rising: Armies Of The Undead” is advertised to be the most realistic depiction of zombie warfare ever to hit video game consoles, and teenage siblings Pete and Lisa can't wait to play it.

Other shows in the festival include Modal Kombat  Two classical guitarists face off, using their instruments as game controllers in a combination video game battle and concert.

NY Hearts: LES Part scavenger hunt, part love story, this transmedia theatrical adventure integrates goods and services featured in the tale, including a yoga studio, a bar, a coffee shop, a retail store, and public landmarks.

Kwaidan: Four Machinima Theater Pieces Characters from World of Warcraft and Halo Reach, among other games, will be projected on a large screen in front of the audience and manipulated by gamers who will be linked to each other and to players on the internet to act out "stories and studies of strange things."

Of Dice and Men  The world of six thirty-something Dungeons and Dragons players is thrown into disarray when one of them announces he has enlisted in the Marine Reserves, and will soon be deployed overseas.

You Blew It! Whether you're a potential contestant or you just "like to watch," don't blow it by missing this hysterical sci-fi quiz-show spectacular.

Text-Based Adventure This is theatre for a generation raised on Choose-Your-Own-Adventure; a generation brought up to believe that options are endless, customization is key, and gratification is best served instant.
